Research; Cricket History of Pakistan

HISTORY of PAKISTAN CRICKET

The history of cricket in Pakistan predates the creation of the country in 1947. The first ever international cricket match in what is Pakistan today was held in Karachi on November 22,1935 between Sindhi and Australian cricket teams. 5,000 Karachites saw the match. The British introduced it during their colonial rule of British India, which covered the area now known as Pakistan. Cricket is the most popular sport in the country. Pakistan has produced many talented cricketers who have been among the best batsmen and bowlers in international cricket.

Pakistan's first Test match was played in Delhi in October 1952 as part of a five Test series which India won 2–1. Pakistan made their first tour of England in 1954 and drew the series 1–1 after a memorable victory at The Oval in which fast bowler Fazal Mahmood took 12 wickets. Pakistan's first home Test match was in Dacca in January 1955 against India, after which four more Test matches were played in Bahawalpur, Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi (all five matches in the series were drawn, the first such occurrence in test history).

Research; Cricket History

Origin of Cricket

The origins of cricket lie somewhere in the dark ages - probably after the roman empire,

almost certainly before the normans invaded england  and almost certainly somewhere in

northern europe. no one knows when or where cricket began but there is a body of

evidence, much of it circumstantial, that strongly suggests the game was devised during

saxon or norman times by children living in the weald, an area of dense woodlands and

clearings in south-east england that lies across kent and sussex. it is generally believed

that cricket survived as a children's game for many generations before it was increasingly

taken up by adults around the beginning of the 17th century. all research concedes that the

game derived from a very old, widespread and uncomplicated pastime by which one player

served up an object, be it a small piece of wood or a ball, and another hit it with a suitably

fashioned club.

Derivation of the name of "cricket"

A number of words are thought to be possible sources for the term "cricket". In the earliest
known reference to the sport in 1598 (see below), it is called creckett. the name may have
been derived from the middle dutch krick(-e), meaning a stick; or the old english cricc or
cryce meaning a crutch or staff. another possible source is the middle dutch word
krickstoel, meaning a long low stool used for kneeling in church and which resembled the
long low wicket with two stumps used in early cricket.

According to Heiner Gillmeister, a european language expert of bonn university, "cricket"
derives from the middle dutch met de (krik ket)sen (i.e., "with the stick chase"), which also
suggests a dutch connection in the game's origin. it is more likely that the terminology of
cricket was based on words in use in south east England at the time and, given trade
connections with the county of flanders, especially in the 15th century when it belonged to
the duchy of burgundy, many middle dutch words found their way into southern english
dialects.

Preliminary Task: The Final Magazine Content Page

Detailed Explanation of Magazine Content Page:

Step 1: First, I selected the same color tone background which I did for my magazine front cover. I fill the layer with this color. Still it did not gave a similar look. I did this because the content page should look of the same magazine cover.

Step 2:  As the color of the background needed to be adjusted I used the hue and saturation tool and adjusted the lightness along with hue and saturation. This helped to make it a little brighter and hence less dull and boring. This color was similar to the magazine cover. I added the dark blue strips on either sides to make it better and for the masthead to stand out.

Step 3: Next, I added the bright red color to make it more decent and interesting along with vertical and horizontal lines to give it a content page look. I kept the space for masthead of the same color as my magazine cover background so it looked as the same magazine.

Step 4: Next, I wrote the 'contents' with the same color and font used in magazine cover 'Engravers MT'

Step 5: Then, I inserted the pictures which consisted of main topics. I adjusted their image size by going in image and selecting image canvas.

Step 6:  After that, I wrote the sub headings for my main topic. I wrote the page number in yellow and  increased it text size to make it visible. I wrote majority of the headings in blue except the 'Teenager Activities' for which I used light brown and used a girlish font 'Hobo Std' and teaser words which I wrote in white along with larger text size to make it eye catching. Using the same font and color gave it a decent look.

Step 7: Lastly, I wrote the date, issue no and website to complete my content page. I used the white color to make it clearly visible. Hence, my content page is ready.

Research and inspirational magazines

Research; Genre:
It is the classification of different media products  to make it easy to reach the target audience and give the producer or industry direction to work towards and to meet the target expectations.

My Genre and the reason I selected this:
I have decided to chose 'Sports' as my genre. The reason behind my choice is that personally I am a professional cricket player. Through out my childhood I have been fascinated by sports, won a million awards for sports in athletics, cricket and remained sports captain in school for five years. This is my passion and my life without which I am incomplete. Sports is a resemblance of my personality. I am more fascinated by this genre then by any other.  Secondly, I have the right exposure, experience and the in depth knowledge and understanding of this genre. I know what the target audience need as I myself contribute to the target market. I'm also familiar with my target market which would range from 18 onwards, keeping in mind of the new talents till 35 which is almost the retiring age.

Codes and Conventions of Sports Magazine;
Features and Characteristics

After examining a couple of sports magazines I have come up with a few connotations in the sports magazine.

  • A famous player is portrait as a main image mostly with an action, sometimes they are also posing on the command of the photographer obviously

  •  Also sometimes more than one person is framed as a main image as in cricket magazine shown below.

  •  The player is actually communicating with the target audience showing attitude that depicts determination, passion, energy, strength and focus to succeed. They are also a means of giving 'hope' to the new talent and the ones struggling to play professionally and succeed.

  • They are mostly represented in their playing kit while holding an element showing their sports or sometimes dressed up and holding a football or basketball etc as shown below.

  • The font used is mostly strong showing passion and easily readable to the target market. The color of the font is mostly black, red and white with bold letters so it is readable as the background is mostly busy in sports magazines.

  • One thing is that Sports Magazines do not have any pug or puff. For reference take a look at the magazine covers images shown. Most of them do consist of strip.

  • There are various settings or backgrounds of sports magazines.  It can be the field where the particular sport  is played such as a ground or hockey stadium etc or it can just be a background the photographer wants as shown in the Tennis Magazine Cover. The background is black.

  •  The representation of sports magazines are normally through firstly a famous player along with the kit and it's sporting gear doing an action. However, they can be portrait as dressed men with attitude and sometimes holding the sporting gear. Examples shown below

There are some existing layouts of magazine in the market that fill the codes and conventions shown below:

Preliminary Task: The Final Magazine Cover

Detailed Explanation of Magazine Cover.

Step 1:  This was the picture I selected as my magazine cover. First I constructed  the magazine cover with the same background but it was very dull and boring. Then I decided to make a new one. I selected the same image. Next I selected the image with the lasso tool and made a copy of that layer. I also used the Bright and Contrast tool in photoshop to enhance the quality of the image.

Step 2: After making the copy of that layer I went to the hue and saturation tool in image and changed the background. In the hue and saturation tool I used the the three elements hue, saturation and lightness and came up with this background color. I liked this background as it would enhance the black color worn by the girl in the image. Also the shadow would also help the image to stand out.

Step 3: After setting my background problem I selected the copy of the image and put it on the layer in which I corrected my background.

Step 4: Then I used the text box and chose the font ' Engravers MT' which I had selected previously and also shown in previous posts. I chose the 'red' color for the masthead because it's a nice contrast with black and it appeared good on the prevailing background and because it stands out. I kept the strip color 'dark purple' and used a different font 'copperplate Gothic bold' to differentiate it with the masthead. Both the masthead and strip were given the 'drop shadow' style in Layer styles to blend it the way magazines headings and sub-headings are. The 1A1 logo was kept white as to make it clearly visible portraying it a school magazine. The 'drop shadow' style was also used.

Step 5: Then I arranged the cover lines and chose different size, font and color tones for my cover lines. In the cover lines of 'Sports Day! Are you Ready!' I used the font 'Lucida Sans Unicode' and gave a sharp look to the text and gave it a shadowy look. I kept the 'Sports Day!' heading larger to make it more eye catching and even in 'Are you Ready!' I kept 'Ready' a little bigger than 'Are you.' This was to give it a look of the magazine.

In the cover line of 'Concert Bonfire....' I increased the font size through ascending order. I kept the color tone of this cover line darker then the cover line discussed above. The font ' Eras Bold ITC' was used with strong text and shadowy look because many important and breathtaking school  events were discussed and this made all the events inspiring to attend. 'Don't Miss It! was kept largest among all to reflect the thrill of all events.

Next the cover line 'Lighter side.....' was written by using the font 'Hebo Std' as it is a lighter font not like the strong fonts used earlier but a crispy look was given to make it interesting. Here I used the 'inner glow' style of text in layer styles to give it a lighter look. The size of 'Exclusive Interview was kept large to make it fascinating to read.

For the cover line of 'South Africa..' the font 'Ravie' was used. This was because Africa is known for it's 'Jungle Adventure' and fun associated with it. This font used with crispy look really symbolized the fun and adventure of 'South Africa.' 'Coming Soon' was kept bigger to make it prominent.

Step 6: The pug or puff was necessary to complete my magazine. I used the polygon tool in the main tool bar. Next I went to the polygon options tool in the above tool bar and selected the star shape along with smooth corners. I kept approximately 26 sides and chose the pink color (Toyo 0038) in the Toyo 94 Color Finder. The pink color actually suited the background and because of it's lightness stand out very well. The font 'Ravie' was used to connote excitement and inspire the target audience to read the magazine. The reason why I used the yellow color for the font is to match it with the background.
